Otoplasty to Reduce and Pin Prominent Ears which Stick Out Too Far

If your ears are too prominent, if they stick out too far, if they are too large, an Otoplasty procedure can bring them back more naturally to the sides of your head.

Prominent ears which stick out can be reduced and flattened and pinned back to the head by an otoplasty or ear pinning reduction plastic surgery operation

This 35 year old man had been concerned for many years about his prominent ears. He was concerned that his ears stuck out too far. He is shown here in before and after photos where Dr. Gallico has brought his ears back closer to the sides of his head in an otoplasty plastic surgery operation. The ears have been returned to the side of his head with a normal amount of projection and position . Dr. Gallico has developed a technique of otoplasty to correct the prominence and projection of the ears at the top, the middle and the bottom to leave the ears in a normal position which is back closer to the scalp, but not too close to the scalp.

The same patient is shown from below in before and after pictures of his plastic surgical otoplasty operation which has changed his ears from their stuck out very prominent position to an angle much closer to the head.

The ear which is too prominent or sticks out too far can occur by the wrong configuration of the ear in the top part (superior crus), the middle part (the concha), and/or the bottom lobe. Dr. Gallico will tailor the otoplasty surgery to correct the patient's particular problems as some prominent ears stick out in one, two, or three places

In the upper part of the ear there should be a helical fold and two anti-helical folds. The upper third may have a deformation of the helical fold , such as a Darwinian Tubercle or an absence of one or both anti-helical folds.

In the mid portion of the prominent ear the concha or bowl of the ear may be too deep which makes the whole ear stick out too far. This portion of the prominent ear can be reduced in the otoplasty operation to bring the ear back closer to the head.

At the bottom of the ear is a small cartilage piece which can push the ear lobe out too far. Dr. Gallico always looks for this small structure in his otoplasty operation to be sure to place it and the ear lobe back closer to the head.
